Problem with mounting CDROM on RHEL 3.0 AS

This is doing my head in, not finding RHEL 3.0 a stable operating system at
all. After the LVM issues I am now having problems updating the installed
packages. I need to install the development tools. So I have gone to
add/remove and selected the required options. It then prompts me for disk 2.
I insert disk 2 into the drive, and it doesn't mount I get the "mount: wrong
fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom," message.

So to get round the problem, i tried making ISO images of the media and
mounting using mount -o loop etc. But now add/remove says it can't see the
disk when I can access the files under the /mnt/cdrom share, and install
random RPM files.

What is wrong with this operation system ? Why can't i just install the
developer tools !!
