I am in the need to upgrade my linux printer and have seen some of the
network ready hp ink jets in the stores.

As I understand, they are usable by linux boxes.

So I was wondering how they are set up.

Do you just log onto them with a web browser, set up their ip address
and then just install the driver?

I am also assuming that windows boxes can also use these printers
without having to go through Samba Network Services?

I don't know about HP network ready printers. However, I have a HP
PSC1410 running as a network printer under CUPS and Windows, ie,
networked client specifies print server's ipaddress or network
name.

I use the CUPS PSC1400 print driver and describe the printer as network
connected. Works like a charm, even better under FC5 than under WinXP
(dual boot system with the printer USB connected).

The other Linux box is setup to print to the printer connected as a WXP or
FC5 printer. WinXP didn't work for awhile before I disabled bidirectional
on the WXP port.

For sanity, check the HP drivers available in your distro or PPDs online
before selecting the printer to buy. Better to have a compatible PPD than
a printer without it.
