So I could not install WinXP as a VMware Server guest on an Athlon
(that is a requirement for this system)?

Athlons and 64 bit Intel Pentiums or Xeon can run x86_64 or x86 RHEL or
Fedora.

Only VMware seems only to run x86_64 guests on Athlon.

x86_64 packages only install on x86_64 OS.

Some 32-bit package require the installation of 32-bit lib-packages, so
do not forget to resolve dependancies.
