That's EXACTLY my worry (being stuck waiting for x86_64 support for
programs I want to use). I'd rather run RHEL or Fedora x86 until the
app support for x86_64 is there. I just want to make sure if I do buy
this machine that I can run an x86 OS and applications (including
VMware Server and regular XP). From what you say it appears I can.
Thanks!!
I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 3800+ under FC4,
[yates@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4 #1 Thu Jun 2 22:55:56 EDT 2005 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
and have had no problems whatsoever.

I currently run Windows 2003 Server (32 Bit version) as a guest in
VMWare Server on my Athlon 64 Linux box (running x86_64 Linux, not
x86). VMware seems to run very well on both x86 and x86_64 platforms
unlink some other applications. I would warn however that unless you
plan on using a huge ammount of RAM, it is a lot easier to just install
an x86 version of Linux. The x86_64 support from 3rd party apps has
been slow to come.

So I could not install WinXP as a VMware Server guest on an Athlon
(that is a requirement for this system)?

I'm thinking of buying a new PC that will eventually run either RHELDear poster,
4WS or Fedora Core 6. This machine (Dell Dimension) will most likely
have an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. Now for the dumb question....
I've never owned/used a machine with an AMD processor. I assume that
the regular AMD chips were just x86 and ran the same software that an
Intel x86 machine would run, what about the AMD Athlon 64? AMD claims
it can run both 32 and 64 bit software. Would this allow me to still
install 32-bit RHEL or Fedora? If I feel like trying out 64-bit would
I install the x84_64 packages (or are those Intel only?). I reealize
(or assume) that if I'm going to install x86_64 software packages, I'll
have had to install the x86_64 OS, that correct? And finally, if I
install the x86_64 OS, can I still install the regular 32-bin (x86
packages?), or am I forced to now only install the 64-bin packages?
Thanks in advance..
Athlons and 64 bit Intel Pentiums or Xeon can run x86_64 or x86 RHEL or
Fedora.
Only VMware seems only to run x86_64 guests on Athlon.
x86_64 packages only install on x86_64 OS.
Some 32-bit package require the installation of 32-bit lib-packages, so
do not forget to resolve dependancies.
Good luck,
