X resource problem: whadyado to my cursor?

For years my text editor has been the
venerable C program xedit that I
hacked to make its window even simpler than
it was originally. With Fedora Core 5
I've discovered two changes in its
behavior that must have something
to do with the runtime X libraries,
because they are present whether I use
the executable that I brought over
from Red Hat 6 or a freshly compiled
version.
First, the edit-point cursor is no
longer a "^" at the bottom of the line.
Instead, it's a hollow rectangle.
Second, the attribute "WhenNeeded"
isn't recognized in my resource line
*editWindow.scrollVertical: WhenNeeded
I got no scrollbar at all unless I
made it unconditional with "True".
I suppose I could brush up on my X
programming skills and figure out how
to custom-make a cursor, etc., but
I thought I would check here first
to see if I've missed something in
migrating from RH 6 to FC 5.
