Default ACL and "mask"

Is there an explanation for the following behavior under RHEL-4:

I have created a folder with the following rights:
# file: daten
# owner: root
# group: daten
user::rw-
group::rw-
group:daten:rw-
mask::rw-
other::---
default:user::---
default:group::rw-
default:group:daten:rw-
default:mask::rw-
default:other::---

Then I have generated a new file in this folder which receives the following
rights:
# file: new file
# owner: root
# group: root
user::rw-
group::rw-
group:daten:rw-
mask::---
other:---

Up to "mask" the result corresponds to my expectations. Problem is that
"default:mask :: rw-" was not taken over and none of the groups has access
now. What is the reason? And what can one change, so that this functions
correctly?

Thanks,
Peter Grawe
