Re: A newbie - What are differences between Red Hat Linux 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Fei,
I forgot...

I recomend you Fedora Core because of the new technology compatibility,
but if you want RedHat you can buy a product from them, you will be
paying for the support that they give you, but if you don't want the
support but you want a very stable version, I recomend you Centos
(www.centos.org) It's exactly the same as RedHat Enterprise Linux,
just with a different logo, if you have problems, the comunity is ready
to help you, they will give you a lot of advice.

Bye

Thank you so much for your explanations, hwlyo!

I have checked Redhat website, it is said that FC is for programmers,
and Redhat Enterprise is for business. Since I am a business student, I
would like to learn the right version which can be used in future
(Maybe). From what you have written, it seems that FC and Enterprise
are the "same" actually and FC is a sort of "pilot version" of
Enterprise....both are applied in commercial world, right? I am just
afraid that what I learn from FC will not be used in business....

Thank you co much!

Fei, there you are a site,
http://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub/linux/fedora-core/6/x86_64//iso/ and don't
worry, it's one of the links that www.redhat.com/fedora gives you to
download from.

to explain a little bit more, RedHat had a free version which was until
version 9 with an option to be supported from them, then they decided
to provide 2 versions Fedora and RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

They put everything new in Fedora for the comunity to try, when it
works "perfectly 100%" they put into RHEL, so, you have the newest free
software in Fedora. So RedHat Linux 9 is a bit out of date!!!

I hope it helps you

Thank you, Jan,

Could you please tell me where I can download a copy of FC6? It seems
there are a couple of websites, but, a stupid question - is there virus
if I download it from a "unofficial" website? I heard that no virus
attached in open source software, but I want to install a duo system in
my laptop - FC6 with Windows, so still a littlie bit unsure...

Thank you so much!

Hi guys:

I would like to learn how to use Linux now! Could you please tell me
what differences between Red Hat Linux 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
are? As a discontinued product, Red Hat Linux 9 is more economically
efficient...since I am just want to learn the basic concept about it
now, is it OK for me to practise Red Hat Linux 9 first, rather than
buying Red Hat Enterprise Linux? Are they similar for a newbie?

Thanks

Fei

Joey,

Fedora Core is a better option. The Fedora Core project is more
up-to-date. LVM for example is not in Red Hat 9 (if I recall corectly).
Fedoara Core is also free of charge, and it supports much more new hardware.

I recommend chosing between FC 5 or FC 6.

Kind regards,
