Installing many co-dependant RPM's

I need to upgrade my openssl packages after installing the latest glibc
... they are quite old actually almost dating back to my distro's
release. What is the best way to do it? Because openssl has a lot of
packages that depend on it, and rpm will not accept an upgrade without
having the others upgraded too. but i can't upgrade the others without
a new ssl... what's the way to upgrade a whole tree of
dependant/dependancies?
Also, does anyone have any advice for keeping rpm packages up to date?
my distro's rh7.1 and i've got the kernel at 2.4.33.. my glibc is 2.3
(hence the need for a new openssl) so far upgrading has been manual
since RHN went enterprise... i've looked at YUM but don't know enough
details to make a move on it.. where does it get its rpm's from? some
repository? what if my stuff's too old?
Thanks people,
Pat
