Unfortunately this is the only linux server in my network... so I
wasn't able to try connecting via F10 at the login screen. However I
did connect to the linux server using XDMCP successfully from a client
designed for Windows XP.

From this I noticed that, yes I was able to log in to the remote
server, but the desktop that I logged into was NOT the desktop that
APPEARS from the video out of the remote server (i.e. the desktop you
would see on the remote server's monitor).

It appears as though connecting via XDMCP creates a virtual desktop and
doesn't connect to the real X display.

However, this might be because I'm using the Windows client. If I were
to connect via XDMCP from a another linux server, will it allow me to
control the real X display of the remote server? Or will it too create
a virtual display?

I'd like to control the real X display of the remote server because I
have the remote server connected to a TV. Watching audio or video on a
virtutal desktop via XDMCP will not come through the remote's server
video out to a connected monitor or TV.

By the real X desktop/dislay, I'm refering to the desktop that is
displayed via the monitor out or s-video out connections.

Do you get what I'm trying to get at here? Let me know if any further
explanation is required?

When I connect via Linux Termial Services Client from Windows to the
Linux box, it presents me with a login and I am able to log in.
However, the TV attached to the server shows the REAL desktop and it's
still at the login screen. Not quite what I'm looking for.

Go for xdcmcp and enable remote login from other machines.
System -> Administrator -> Login Screen

This allows you to login from a remote machine with F10 and selecting
the machine (if they are in the same network). I use this all the time.
All other seem to work easy but sound is muted.

What is exactly the problem you are facing with XDMCP?

Once this is enable on the server side, you need to go to the client
machine and (from the login screen) press F10 to see all Remote login
enabled servers in your network. Select the one you want to login and go
ahead.
