Does the uname dump leave you in question? I thought that the i686
indicated the 686 kernel, but do I have to check somewhere else as well?

Are you sure, you have the i686 kernel installed? There is an bug in the
Fedora Installer, which insists to install the i586 kernel. For most
things
you will not recognise it, but the cpu freq scaling modules will not work
with this kernel.
