syslogd does not start

syslogd does not start on boot.

It will start if run manually:

# /sbin/syslogd -m 0
# ps -ef|grep syslog|grep -v grep
root 25905 1 0 21:58 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/syslogd -m 0

If started from the initscripts ... it will not start.
# /etc/init.d/syslog start
# /etc/init.d/syslog restart
Shutting down kernel logger: [FAILED]
Shutting down system logger: [ OK ]
Starting system logger:
^
|
This eventually fails.
Processes running during this startup are.

root 25953 25912 0 22:00 pts/3 00:00:00 /bin/bash ./syslog
restart
root 25969 25953 0 22:00 pts/3 00:00:00 initlog -q -c syslogd -
m 0
root 25970 25969 0 22:00 pts/3 00:00:00 syslogd -m 0
root 25971 25970 0 22:00 ? 00:00:00 [syslogd] <defunct>

I have reinstalled sysklogd and initscripts

syslogd will still not start.

Thanks in advance.
