pax and large file support?

We have a fully up2date RHEL 4AS machine. It appears that pax cannot
handle any file size over 2GB. Whenever I try to use a file size
larger than 2GB the following error occurs:

pax: Unable to access bigfile <Value too large for defined data type>

If it helps here is the command I am running (where bigfile is a 3GB
file):

ls bigfile | pax -wdv -x cpio | gzip -c > test

Any suggestions? Thanks!!
