Upgrade RHEL WS to ES?

For background information, I just finished hammering an Oracle 10g
server into a RHEL4 WS host. I attempted to do this after talking
several people that had experience installing Oracle in RHEL4. They
assured me that there were no problems whatsoever. When I first
attempted to do this, I received a multitude of linking errors with
the Oracle tools (DBCA, NETCA, etc.). I discovered that a lot of
required rpm packages were missing. I downloaded the rpm packages from
Red Hat and installed them one by one and then relinked everything in
Oracle. I even had to download rpm packages not mentioned in the
Oracle notes and manuals. I can only assume that the all the required
rpm packages came with RHEL4 ES/AS or the people that I talked to
downloaded every rpm package available from Red Hat before they
installed Oracle. I would like to know the answer to this question for
future reference.
My question is: can you upgrade RHEL4 WS to ES without destroying
everything? I have a solid UNIX background, but my experience with Red
Hat per se is minimal. Do I have to install RHEL ES overwriting
everything, then reinstalling all the rpm packages and finally
reinstalling Oracle?
