Because you don't have 17MB available on the filesystem. Error messages are

More specific, the /lib/modules directory will be filled with kernel modules. /lib is on your / filesystem.

You could try to remove some old kernels to create some space.

Broken grub.


Try booting from CD1 and go into rescue mode.

chroot to the hard disk, like suggested by the rescue environment

from there try a grub-install /dev/hda (or which device the MBR should be put on).

Warning: Be sure the broken kernel update is not put in /etc/grub.conf. If you see a set of lines for the bad kernel, delete them before rebooting.
