Remote login (XDMCP) very slow, RHEL 5 Client

Hi folks,
Just done a clean install of RedHat Enterprise 5 Client (x86 32-bit)
on a 2GHz Pentium4 machine with 1GB RAM. After completing the install
and going through the first-time boot wizard (SELinux disabled, no
firewall, not connected to NIS) I log in on the console as root (I
know it's not recommended but it's just a test box) with no problems.
I used the GNOME login window configuration applet to enable remote
logins via XDMCP, to allow root to log in remotely and not to deny TCP
connections to the X server. The login screen is set to use the low-
graphics version of the greeter. However, when I try to log in to the
machine using Hummingbird Exceed 8.0.0.22 from my XP machine, it's
incredibly slow to generate the welcome screen. Doing the same thing
on RHEL 4 machines works fine, any ideas why RHEL5 might be so slow?
It's currently taken about 40 minutes to draw the small, grey window
and still hasn't finished, attempts to click on the Session menu (for
example) don't seem to work...
TIA
Niall
