e2fsck problem

I am having a really hard time repairing my /dev/sda5.

First of all I cannot boot into my rhel4 system and hangs on GRUB

I boot into knoppix and tried to run

e2fsck -c -y /dev/sda5

After running for a while

it comes back and error out

Group desciptors look bad... trying backup blocks...
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sda5

e2fsck: io manager magic bad!

What should i do?

I have other partiions like /dev/sda2, sda3 I can mount to but not sda5
