well there are software GUIs which are updated under windows, so the small
partition is no biggie.
also, there was something about a bootable windows disk? assuming the
installation cd, though i don't
know how i could add updated GUI's in this instance.

You install Linux then you install VMware Server. Start VMware server and
install Windows and any other OS that you want. You don't need to do a
native Win98 install, and you don't need to create a partition for it.
VMs live in VMware files. You can share Linux directories with a Windows
VM by using SAMBA.
