Yes, this was something they took over from deja-news in 2001 (the
deja-news domain name is now owned by google, but deja-news started a
full time archive of Usenet in 1995, though it contains some older
posts).
A trivial point of order, but in 1995 and at least several years
afterward it was my-dejanews.com, back in the era when people responded
to the childish concept of *My* Computer, *My* McDonald's, etc. I seem to
recall that deja[-]news.com replaced it in 2000.
You may want to search for those domain names at google ;-)
'deja.com' and 'dejanews.com' were used to access the search engine.
'my-dejanews.com' was used for email addresses of users. 'dejanews.com'
was the original name, and they changed (added, I think) the name
'deja.com' in 1999.
As far as Allie's suggestion about using
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en to search and using a real
NNTP server to post, I've been doing that since day one of my-dejanews.com
One of my systems (not this one) still has a script that reads
[van-allen ~]$ cat /usr/local/bin/deja
#lynx http://www.dejamews.com/
lynx http://www.deja.com/
[van-allen ~]$
though I'm pretty certain I never posted from there.
