I'm trying to find out what a grub.conf file looks like at the rebooting stage after the update image has been made from the poke-and-hope interface. (I can't find any log files or anything to do with it, nor a man page)
At the reboot stage, I don't get a new grub option. I had a look around in the /boot directory and found a vmlinuz and a upgrade.img, but there's no information I can find (yet) which tells me how grub should be configured to make use of them.
I'm guessing that the design is for a box with a single Fedora 8 on it., and if that's what my machine had, I'd not have to know anything about the grub intricacies. My machine has two other distros on it, and an appropriate menu.lst which grub uses correctly to get to the three I'm interested in. I'd like to add a section to that.
At some stage, stage2 I believe it's called, grub should be finding kernel information and, in this case, there must be a way to direct attention to the upgrade image. Information on what is required in a grub.conf file to use this information is what I'm lacking. I made a few guesses, but the process would get stuck at a point asking me where my CDROM files were (and seems to expect that to be in /mnt/somewhere.
The prospect of using a 100 Mb image to upgrade to Fedora 9 instead of downloading an entire installation is enticing. There's a lot in an entire distro I don't want, and I have various bits I've installed from source, and I'd prefer not to redo that, so I'm keen to find out how to do it.
However, the paucity of information on how to make use of preupgrade has stymied my attempts. Any info on where that can be found would be greatly appreciated.
Do a: "man grub" followed by a "info grub".
Even the RH9 guide has a good description of the grub's involvement in
the boot process:

After looking over the material, let us know if you still have questions.
Best wishes.
