Thanks for the suggestion, but I need much newer information than that. The idea of preupdate AFAIK wasn't around until Fedora 8. It's how grub can use the upgrade image without looking for rpms on a CD that I can't find covered anywhere. I'm strongly suspecting that it will work only on systems that have a single OS (or maybe it will work if it is a dual-boot with the chainloader stuff for windows).
Of course, I could just be looking unintelligently.
