So, would a later version of RedHat + Gnome run OK on my machine?
Most likely, yes
I forgot to say that I attempted to install RHEL5 at an earlier
stage, but it was very slow on my laptop.
What all was installed, and what all was running? How do you define
"slow"? A problem with many later Linux distributions is that they
default to enabling IPv6.

With RHEL5, the problem was actually with Gnome, I think. If I tried
to open multiple windows on the desktop, Gnome was very slow at
refreshing.
Looks like modern Gnome distros won't run on 256 meg RAM.

Oh, ghods, yes, the amount of "features!" stuffed into Gnome is not your friend. One thing that helps tremendously is renaming the 'Nautilus' binary, so that the system can't find it but you can if you need it. Don't uninstall, that breaks lots of dependencies: just rename the binary.
