Hi,Hello Steve:
I try to use NUT-Client, in order to shutdown the server when they are
running on batteries.
Apparently, the system will shutdown WHEN the battery reaches a
critical
level.
- But what does it mean ? Is that 50% 40% 30% ?
- Is there a way to control this ?
and to say that I want to launch the shutdown, when the battery reach
the 30%
thanks and regards
Without knowing much more about your system details, a definitive
answer
can not be given.

Hi Pete,
Sorry...
Well,
I have an APC UPS systems connected via RS232 to a computer running NUT
"server"... The communication is fine and I can see the power load, if
the UPS system is working on battery or not...
Now, I need to configure some servers. to be able to shutdown properly.
For that, I installed NUT-Client on each server that I have
On Fedora, I installed the package Nut-client
The system seems to communicate properly with the server :
When I start the UPS service I have :
[root@dns ups]#
[root@dns ups]#
[root@dns ups]# /sbin/service ups restart
Stopping UPS monitor: [ OK ]
Starting UPS monitor (slave): Network UPS Tools upsmon 2.2.0-
UPS: upssmart@xxxxxxxxxxx (slave) (power value 1)
Using power down flag file /etc/killpower [ OK ]
[root@dns ups]#
Broadcast message from nutmon (Wed Feb 18 13:46:22 2009):
UPS upssmart@xxxxxxxxxxx on battery
-----------------------------------------
So I you can see, it can detect when the UPS goes on Battery
BUT, I can see that it will never shutdown .( apparently )
What I want to do, is to decide by myself, WHEN I want the shutdown (
10% , 50% or 80% of power remaining !! )
the documentation said that the server will shutdown when the power leve
l is "critical"...
I don't know what "critical" means. That's I want to clarify, saying
critical is when 30% of Energy is remaining
Snip, snip...
Hello Steve:
The devil is in the details; what is the precise model number of your
APC UPS?
Pete
This is a APC va 1000RM
Part number : SUA 10000 RMI2U
( I thought that the UPS server could read the % of power remaining ,
whatever the UPS ..... ) ?!??!
Thanks
Hello Steve:
I thought I still had my documentation regarding a similar rack mounted
APC UPS I had installed using APC's PowerChute with a Sun server
application.
The best I can recommend now is posing your same question on the APC
forum. Although you can't expect support for NUT-client, they may be
able to relate to PowerChute.
However, it seems that the shutdown point is best left to the hardware
circuits in the UPS. Out of curiosity, what are you hoping to achieve
by possibly modifying their recommended shutdown point? Battery life
will be about 2-5 years depending on use and modifying their shutdown
point could force your computer off too soon or not soon enough.
Best wishes to you.
Pete
